Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service that provides our patrons with Library materials that are not available on Long Island. You must fill out the ILL Request Form linked below. Hard copies of the form are also available at the Reference Desk. Please read the policy before filling out the form to familiarize yourself with eligibility, fees, exclusions, and more.
POLICY
The Franklin Square Public Library (FSPL) participates in the Nassau Library System’s (NLS) resource sharing program, borrowing materials from other Nassau County libraries. When necessary, interlibrary loans (ILL) may be obtained from libraries outside the county via LILINK or out of state via OCLC Worldshare (through NLS).
Purpose: ILL is designed to assist FSPL patrons’ access materials not available within the NLS libraries. This service is offered as a courtesy, and is designed to equitably benefit all members of our community.
Eligibility and Limits:
- ILL service is available to FSPL cardholders in good standing.
- Requests can be made in person or online.
- Patrons may have a maximum of three (3) active ILL requests at a time (including items on loan and items being searched for).
- ILL requests can take one week to three months (or longer) to fulfill. Please indicate any deadlines.
Fees:
- Patrons are responsible for the postage to return each ILL item ($5 per item). Any other fees charged by the lending library will also be the patrons’ responsibility. Patrons will be contacted for approval before placing the request. Patrons are responsible for any authorized fees, even if the item is not picked up.
- Overdue items: $1/day.
- Lost or damaged items: Patrons are responsible for the replacement cost and any other charges assessed by the lending library. No refunds will be issued for lost items that are later found (unless the lending library agrees).
- Insurance: Patrons are responsible for the cost of insurance to mail back items that have a replacement value over $100.
Loan Periods and Renewals:
- Loan periods and renewals are determined by the lending library and may be subject to recall. Some items may also be restricted to in-library use only.
- Patrons who return items late may have their ILL privileges suspended.
Other Information:
- Patrons are responsible for the condition of borrowed materials and agree to return the item in the condition it was received.
- Patrons who return items in damaged condition may have their ILL privileges suspended.
Exclusions:
- Textbooks
- Audiovisual materials (DVDs, CDs, etc.) – due to copyright or fragility
- Rare or archival materials
- Entire issues of periodicals
