Residents: If you reside in School District #17, you are entitled to a Franklin Square Library card. Not all addresses in Franklin Square are eligible, so a Clerk at the Circulation Desk will ask to see your ID. (Sorry, PO BOX addresses are not accepted.)

H. Frank Carey Students: Students enrolled in H. Frank Carey High School may apply for a library card. You must provide your valid student ID, or show proof you are a student with the online portal, and fill out the application.

School District 17 Staff: Staff currently employed in any SD#17 schools may apply for a library card lasting one school year. You must bring a photo ID and a current pay stub as proof. These courtesy cards are only valid at the Franklin Square Public Library.

Temporary Residents: A temporary 6 month card may be issued to adults, 18 years or older, residing in transient housing. Please contact us for more information.

You will need 2 forms of ID with your current SD#17 address, one of which must be a photo ID. If your photo ID does not have your current SD#17 address on it, please bring 2 forms of ID with the address on them, plus the photo ID.

All identification must be current. Bills must be within the last 30 days.

  • Driver’s License
  • Non driver photo ID card
  • Current student ID card

Other form of ID

  • Bill (tax, utility, cell phone, etc.)
  • Bank statement
  • Car registration
  • Proof of car insurance

A parent or legal guardian must present his/her own forms of ID and the child must be present.

Children typically receive their first Library card during a class trip to the Library in first grade if they attend John Street, Polk Street, or Washington Street School.

Children not yet in 1st grade may obtain a library card upon Parent or Legal Guardian’s request.

If you've experienced an inability to access online services, like ebooks on Libby or movies on Kanopy, it may be because your card is expired. We'll let you know if you call to place a hold or if you come into the Library to check out an item. You'll also get a courtesy email ahead of the expiration if you have an email address on your account.

Library cards need to be renewed/updated every 3 years. When you renew your card, we will ask you to verify your address, phone number, and email address.

If you find your card is expired, you can ONLY renew it by coming into the Library with your expired card (either the physical card or the digital version of your card found on the Nassau Library app) and a form of ID, like your driver's license. If the address on your license does not match the address in our system, you will need to bring in a piece of mail that has your name, address, and a date within 30 days. If you are a patron aged 18 or above, you have to be the one to renew your own card; no one else can do it for you.

Only a parent or legal guardian may renew a library card for a child. To renew the card, the parent or legal guardian must present their own ID as well as the child’s library card. Children do not need to be present.

We can renew your card anytime during normal business hours. Please refer to our Hours and Holiday Closures page for the most current information.

Please let us know if your library card has been lost or stolen. We will freeze your account for your security. We ask you to present ID that has the matching address on the account in order to process a new library card.

If your library card is old, damaged, or unreadable, we will upgrade your card free of charge.

Digital cards are special cards that allow access to the Library's online resources for individuals over 13 years of age. These cards are good for four month periods. If you'd like to sample our digital content and don't already have a library card, you can apply here for a digital card.

Digital cards can NOT be renewed. Once a digital card has expired, you must come into the Library to fill out an application for a physical card with the required proof as outlined above.

The process for obtaining a Franklin Square Public Library card may seem cumbersome, but it is Policy that is determined by the Library’s Board of Trustees (made up of your neighbors).

It is to ensure that only those who pay taxes to the Franklin Square school district are entitled to a library card.
